Domus Aurea Guided Tour. After 8 years from the closure for restoration, the Domus Aurea opens its ‘doors’ to visitors. Every week end from October
26th 2014 to August 30th 2015, thanks to the explanations of an expert guide, you will have the opportunity to discover the magnificent residence of the emperor Nero
and the breathtaking frescoes that inspired the most famous renaissance artists.
The dwelling of the Roman emperor has deserved the name Domus Aurea (‘golden house’ in Latin language) thanks to the refined marbles and the vaults decorated with gold and precious gems.
After the death of Nero, his successors tried to cancel every trace of the palace: the gold and the precious gems were plundered and the rooms were filled with soil up to the vaults.
The guided visit itinerary winds its way between 15 steps that will change on the strength of the restore works. The reservation is compulsory and includes the guided tour.
It is very important to be at the Domus Aurea entrance (Via della Domus Aurea, 1) 15 minutes before the time fixed on the voucher; if you will arrive later you will lose your reservation.
